Israeli teachers earn less than half the global average

Student expenditure in Israel ranging from kindergarden to high school, is low in contrast with the average among member states in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to an annual report published by the group on Tuesday.

The report also reveals that Israeli teachers earn significantly less than the world average: $13,257 per year as a starting salary, as opposed to the global $27,828 average yearly salary, according to the international conversion index.

Nonetheless, Education Ministry authorities say that the figures are in reference to 2006, and it is not yet clear how the "Ofek Hadash" (new horizon) education reform will will shape future salary data.

The Ofek Hadash reform, expected to go into effect after the Jewish holidays, involves the use of a time clock to better monitor teachers' overtime, in order to compensate them more accurately.

In response to the report, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz said that education is one of the factors making up Israel's strength. "Just as the government sees the multi-annual defense budget as an essential component, thus a protected multi-annual budget must be created for education in Israel," he said.

Mofaz added that the figures published by the OECD once again prove "that this is our weak spot and that's where we need to invest. Today's education is everyone's future."
