Five Palestinians hurt in clashes with settlers in Hebron

Jewish settlers and Palestinians threw stones in clashes on Monday that injured five in the West Bank city of Hebron where Jews are vowing to halt the evication of settlers who have taken refuge in a home not far from the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

Five Palestinians, including a 12-year-old boy, were injured, Palestinian medics in the flashpoint city said.

At least two Palestinian cars also were set ablaze in what an Israeli security source described as a riot beside the building where the Jewish families facing eviction have been living for a year and a half.

The High Court of Justice earlier this month ordered the so-called House of Contention vacated within three days, after settlers presented forged ownership claims. A loophole was found allowing them to remain for a full 30 days before any government force could be taken.

The house is situated near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a holy Jewish site in the middle of a mostly Arab city.

An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said troops at the scene "did their best" to separate the sides.

Jewish settlers have vowed to resist an Israeli court order to leave the building they insist they bought from a Palestinian.

Settler spokesman David Wilder said a Jewish teenager was attacked by Palestinians earlier in the day, triggering the flare-up.

He said Palestinians hurled stones at settlers from their rooftops and "people here don't believe in turning the other cheek".

Hundreds of settler supporters, mostly youths, have come to the Jewish enclave in the past week to try to prevent the evacuation of the building, raising tensions.

Settlers moved into the disputed building in March 2007.

Palestinian Faiz Rajabi said the building belongs to him and he has denied selling it to the settlers.

Over a thousand protesters arrived Monday evening in Hebron to support settlers who refuse to vacate the building. Meanwhile, in an attempt to escalate the struggle against the evacuation, settlers blocked off roads in the Samaria region.

The road blocking took place as part the settler's "price tag" policy, in which they retaliate for every outpost evacuation with attacks on soldiers and/or Palestinians. The road blocking, however, is the first case that this policy was executed beforehand, rather then after the evacuation.

The settlers' mode of operating was to block off roads for several minutes and move on to the next location as soon as IDF soldiers arrived.

As a result olive groves were damaged, and clashes with Palestinians in the Itzhar region were reported. Several roads were blocked around Hawara as well as another road near Jericho. Similar activity is expected to take place in the areas of Binyamin Regional Council.

Supporters of settlers are calling on the public to disclose "any information" possible regarding concrete Israel Defense Forces' plans to evacuate the premises.

"In light of media reports regarding the intentions of the defense minister to evacuate the house under strictly secret methods, we have decided to call out to lovers of the Land of Israel for their help and alertness in gathering information on plans for the evacuation, which could take place any day now - heaven forbid," reads the public notice.

The settler campaign has urged the public to "pass along any information on concentration of forces, mobilization, training and logistic preparations, such as transportation, food and medical emergency alert... Pay attention to any suspicious movement on the roads. Ask your sons and neighbors who are in the army to be alert."

The campaign has also called on supporters to begin increasing settler presence in the house at once.
