Why did Netanyahu postpone his trip to Paris?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed his upcoming visit to Paris, his bureau announced Tuesday.

Officials said the decision was made because of timetable constraints.

However, European diplomatic sources said the decision was probably made because of Netanyahu's desire to show some sort of diplomatic progress before arriving in Paris, where he is expecting to hear similar statements to those he heard from Barack Obama in Washington last week.

Netanyahu's office announced that his visit to Europe will now take place within a few weeks and will last around three days, including stops in Paris, Rome and London.

Also Tuesday, Netanyahu told a visiting delegation of members from the U.S. Congressional Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia that requiring Israel to completely freeze all settlement construction - including that required for natural growth - was not logical and that Israel would not accept it.

A group of senior Israeli officials led by Minister Dan Meridor passed on a similar message to the United States special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, during a meeting in London Tuesday.

In the meeting with the congresspeople, Netanyahu said Israel would not build new settlements and would act to dismantle illegal outposts.
