Abbas tells Palestinians: Israel doesn't want peace
By Reuters

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told supporters in the West Bank town of Bethlehem on Sunday that they must remain committed to peace, despite what he called Israel's failure to promote a viable solution.

Israel was not fulfilling the preconditions necessary for seeing a peace deal, said Abbas, emphasizing that as long as settlement activity continued, peace could not be reached.

"These are the conditions of the Road Map that urges Israel to halt settlements, dismantling all of the settlements that are built on lands of the West Bank in order to establish a Palestinian state," he said.

"It appears they do not want peace, and they don't want to stop settlement, and they don't want the vision of two-states, so I don't know what they want," he told a crowd outside the presidential palace.

"We must remain believers in peace," he added, speaking in a carpark which still bears the track marks of Israel tanks stationed there during the Intifada, or uprising, which swept the Palestinian territories in 2000.

Thousands of Palestinians turned out across the West Bank, particular in the city of Hebron, on Sunday to urge Abbas to run for re-election.

Waving flags, Abbas supporters lined the streets of Hebron to greet the president as he conducted a rare tour of towns in West Bank, part of the territories where the Palestinians aim to establish a state.

"Mahmoud Abbas, don't step down! You are the foundation," chanted the crowd.

The scenes were broadcast live on official Palestine television, which has been airing programs in support of Abbas since his declaration on Thursday that he did not want to run in the election he recently scheduled for Jan. 24.

Many analysts believe his announcement could be a tactic to prompt the United States to put more pressure on Israel to halt all West Bank settlement building. But chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat reiterated on Sunday that Abbas's announcement was a not a tactic.

Given Hamas's decision to ban the election in the Gaza Strip, many analysts doubt whether the poll will be conducted at all.
