Hamas website: Iran promises aid to Palestinian security forces
By News Agencies

Iran has promised to give assistance to the security forces of the Hamas-led Palestinian government, a Hamas website said Friday.

The promise came during a visit to Tehran by Palestinian Interior Minister Said Siyam, which began Tuesday, according to the website. Siam was accompanied by four of his advisers and the head of Hamas' 3,500-member militia.

A senior Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said Iran had promised to give vehicles to the Palestinian security forces.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for the destruction of Israel and questioned the veracity of the Holocaust.

"We see the positions of Ahmadinejad as a source of pride for Muslims," Siyam was quoted as saying on the Hamas website. "Especially when he challenges the sources of international arrogance," he said, in an apparent reference to America and Israel.

Siyam met with Ahmadinejad and Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, visited Iran's security branches and attended a training session at the police academy, the website said. Senior Iranian officers promised to assist the Palestinians, it said.

The Hamas government has faced crippling economic sanctions since taking office in March, with Western nations demanding the group recognize Israel and renounce violence in order to receive foreign aid. Hamas has refused.

Ahmadinejad said Iran had no reservations that would stop it from helping the Hamas government, the site said. Iran's Republican Guards are believed to have helped train Hezbollah, and Iran is one of the main financial backers of the Lebanese guerrilla group, which fought a 34-day war with Israel over the summer.

"The victories of Hamas and Hezbollah have put the Zionist entity in a difficult situation," the site quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

U.S. citizen pleads guilty to providing material support to Hamas
A U.S. citizen has pleaded guilty in a federal court to providing material support to Hamas, the U.S. Justice Department said on Friday.

Mohamed Shorbagi, 42, of Rome, Georgia, was charged in August with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
