Initial police investigations have found that on Saturday a woman arrived at the hospital suffering from labor pains, and gave birth shortly thereafter.

The infant was transferred to the nursery of the hospital, and the mother was moved to the hospital's maternity ward.

The next morning, nurses in the maternity ward discovered that the mother had disappeared from the hospital.

Nurses at the hospital told police that the mother bore no resemblance to the woman whose picture was on the ID card she presented when checking in.

On Tuesday morning, a woman who closely resembled the woman in the ID card photo arrived at the hospital attempting to pay for the mother's hospitalization. When asked to present identification, she quickly fled the scene, and hospital staff called the police.

Local police said that all avenues and possibilities are being checked in the investigation.

The police are not sure if the birth mother is Palestinian or Jewish, since the place of residence on the ID card she presented read Tyre, an Arab town north of Kfar Sava.
