Surfer champion, seen with Bar Rafaeli, detained over scuffle

Israeli police detained eight-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater early Saturday after a scuffle with photographers who were trying to take pictures of him with Israeli supermodel Bar Rafaeli, police said.

Israeli photographers were waiting outside as Rafaeli and the American surfer left a hotel in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya before dawn Saturday, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. In an effort to prevent the cameramen from taking pictures, Slater pushed them, a photographer at the scene told Channel Two said.

A brawl broke out and Slater was taken for questioning and later released, Rosenfeld said.

It was not the first time foreign guests of Rafaeli have scuffled with journalists. Earlier this year Rafaeli and her then-boyfriend, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, created a media storm when he visited her in Israel. After eluding journalists for days, the pair was met by a group of waiting photographers when they toured Jerusalem.

Their bodyguards scuffled with photographers, punching some and damaging equipment. Rafaeli later told an Israeli newspaper she wouldn't bring anyone famous to Israel because there is a chutzpah here that you won't see anywhere else.

Israeli media has reported the two have broken up recently.

Refaeli is reportedly in Israel for a photo shoot to appear in next year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.

Slater, an American of Syrian descent, was visiting Israel for three days to join activities of the groups Surfing for Peace and One Voice.

An 86-year-old Jewish member of Surfing for Peace, Dorian Paskowitz, asked Slater to come to Israel to promote the group's efforts to bring Israelis and Palestinians together through the sport, said his son, David.

"My father asked him if he was ready to be not only great surfer but a great man as well," David Paskowitz said.

Paskowitz, a retired doctor who has been surfing for 75 years, donated 12 surfboards to Gaza's small surfing community during his visit in August.

Slater decided on Saturday to extend his trip to Israel by one day to Sunday, Channel Two reported.

Slater sang with a local band at a Tel Aviv beach concert Friday and
planned to visit areas around the country on Saturday, Paskowitz said.

The surfer from Cocoa Beach, Florida will not visit the Gaza Strip, Paskowitz said. He did not explain why.

Israel has severely limited travel to the coastal territory since the Islamic Hamas group seized the area in bloody fighting in June
