PA blasts Israel for riot in Ketziot Prison, which leaves dozens hurt

The Palestinian Authority blamed Israel for a riot that erupted Sunday night at the Ketziot Prison near Israel's border with Egypt, in which 15 guards and 15 security prisoners were wounded.

The cabinet of PA Prime Minister Salam Fayad issued a statement saying it "strongly condemns this barbarian aggression" against the "hero prisoners."

The vast majority of security prisoners held in Israel are Palestinian. For Palestinians, the fate of their 11,000 jailed brethren is one of the most sensitive matters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Two prisoners needed hospitalization, one for critical wounds. The other was seriously wounded.

The riots broke out around 2 A.M. on Sunday while guards were carrying out a routine search of the prisoners' tents. The inmates began hurling items at the guards and set 10 tents in the prison yard on fire.

Prison officials believe around 1,000 security prisoners took part in the riots. It reportedly took nearly an hour for guards to reestablish control.

Sources at Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva stated that the critically injured prisoner is suffering from a head wound. The prisoner was wounded when he was hit by a non-lethal crowd dispersal device fired by guards.

Prison officials have denied the media access to the facility, and refused to allow photography of the damage caused during the riots. MK Jamal Zahalka (Balad) demanded that Red Cross officials be given permission to investigate the incident.

Palestinian member of parliament Issa Qaraqe told Reuters prisoners in Israeli jails would hold a one-day hunger strike on Tuesday to protest against the violence.

Hamas, which seized control of the Gaza Strip in June, also said it would organize marches in the coastal enclave and the West Bank city of Hebron on Monday to express solidarity with the inmates
