(AP) Last update - 22:01 10/03/2008 FM to U.S. officials: Hamas will not choose when to fire and when to regroup By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: united states, palestinians  Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni addressed senior Mideast experts in Washington on Monday, saying "We will not let Hamas choose when to attack and when to stop and regroup." Livni also stressed that weapons smuggling across the Sinai-Gaza border must be dealt with immediately. "There are two principles upon which Israel will not compromise," Livni told the dignitaries. "One - that the implication of establishing two sovereign states is that each provides its people with a complete national solution. This means that the Palestinian state will be responsible for providing a solution to all Palestinians, including refugees in camps who are being used as bargaining chips." Livni said the second principle was the assurance of Israel's security and defense needs, and called on all governments to endorse security as Israel's basic right. Advertisement Senior U.S. officials from previous governments as well as representatives of current Democrat presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama attended the conference with Livni, as did representatives of Republican candidate John McCain. She added that Israel expects any U.S. administration to protect the bilateral nature of the Israel-Palestinian peace process and ensure each side's leadership makes its own decisions relating to its citizens. She stressed that any administration should act according to these basic principles on the matter of refugees and Israel's security just as President George Bush outlined in a recent letter signed by 'The U.S. Congress'. Livni also addressed the Iranian issue. "We see that the international community understands that the world cannot allow itself a nuclear Iran, but the price is still not clear enough," she said. "In the Middle East every hesitation is considered a weakness. The countries in the region are examining the behavior of the international community. Iran can become a dangerous regional and global player even before it has the bomb, if the Arab and Muslim world thinks that the Western World has given up in its struggle against a nuclear Iran."
