Last update - 16:06 24/03/2008 Saudi envoy to represent Riyadh at Arab summit instead of king By Reuters Tags: Saudi Arabia, Arab summit  Saudi Arabia's permanent representative at the Arab League said on Monday he would represent his country at this week's Arab summit in Damascus, meaning influential King Abdullah would be staying away. "I will head Saudi Arabia's delegation to the summit," Ahmad bin Abdelaziz Qattan told reporters after a meeting of Arab League representatives in the Syrian capital. The announcement confirmed fears that Lebanon's political crisis would hit the level of turnout at the summit and undermine the annual meeting. Advertisement "We meet today without a president in Lebanon due to the continued and unjustifiable delays in the election," Qattan told the meeting earlier. Lebanon's parliament speaker Nabih Berri indicated on Sunday that he would postpone for the 17th time a session, this time scheduled for Tuesday, during which a president was to be chosen, due to a lack of progress toward ending the political deadlock. A delay would mean that there would be no Lebanese president to attend the March 29-30 Arab summit. Lebanon has been without a president since Emile Lahoud's term ended in November. Heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Egypt blame Syria for blocking an election in Lebanon and their leaders are not expected to attend. "We look forward to an effective Syrian role in achieving a Lebanese national reconciliation," the Saudi envoy said.
