Haifa U. students slam decision to hold tests during Holocaust Day siren
By Fadi Eyadat, Haaretz Correspondent

Students at Haifa University expressed their anger Wednesday after the university decided to schedule tests on the Holocaust Memorial Day, some during the siren that marks a moment of silence. The students, many which have family members who died in the holocaust, are demanding that the tests be canceled.

The university said in response that the decision was made for lack of any other options, in the wake of the lengthy lecturer's strike earlier this year.

The Holocaust Memorial Day will be on May 1st and the siren that marks a minute of silence will be at 10 a.m. Some of the tests will take place during the siren.

"This step cheapens the memorial day. It is unclear how a student will take a test, stand for a minute of silence while the siren rings, and then go back to the test," Amir Schneider said, a law student who's uncle was killed by the Nazis.

"I have great respect for the Holocaust Memorial Day, and take a few minutes after the siren to reflect upon it," Schneider said, "how am I supposed to take this test?"

Head of the Students Union, Yaniv Ben Shushan, agrees that Haifa University is being disrespectful.

"This is a day of mourning and this may cause tension between the Jewish and Arab students as some will rise for a moment of silence while other may continue to take the test," Ben Shushan said.

Haifa University said in response that they "honor the memory of the Holocaust and will have a memorial service during which there won't be any tests."

"However, the Holocaust Memorial Day is not an official holiday and businesses are all open. Due to the lecturer's strike and in order to avoid damaging the students, there is no other option but to have tests on this day. Each student will be able to take the test on three different occasions, so those who decide not to take a test on that day won't have to."
