Police arrest four Palestinians in Bat Yam, call off high terror alert

Police in Bat Yam said Sunday they arrested four Palestinians who infiltrated the area, prompting authorities to declare a high alert and erect checkpoints and roadblocks on major highways and arteries in the vicinity.

One of the detainees was one of them a suspected terrorist, while the three others were caught illegally residing in Israel.

Security officials received a tip Sunday morning indicating that a Palestinian sought for questioning in connection with alleged terrorist activities had managed to infiltrate into Israel.

Authorities feared the terrorist was in the process of carrying out an attack against Israelis.

Acting in concert with the Shin Bet security service, the Tel Aviv police declared a state of maximum alert.

An initial investigation revealed that the suspect was last seen in the Holon-Bat Yam area. Large contingents of security forces were deployed in the region, where they began scouring the streets in search of the suspect.

At 10:30 A.M., the Police Special Anti-Terror Unit (known by its Hebrew acronym "Yamam") and its Barak special forces unit arrived at the Yoseftal Street exit on the Ayalon Freeway in Bat Yam, where they spotted a commercial vehicle followed by a bus filled with passengers.

The Yamam forces stormed the bus while Barak took control of the vehicle, where four Palestinians were sitting inside. Authorities identified one of the Palestinians as the wanted suspect.

Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether the suspect, who was not carrying any weapons at the time of his arrest, had intended to carry out an attack.

The other three Palestinians have no connection with terrorist activity. All four have been taken into custody for questioning. Authorities also said Sunday that security forces are not searching for any explosive devices in other areas.

Earlier Sunday morning, Tel Aviv District Police were placed on maximum alert due to fears that a terrorist successfully infiltrated the area.

Undercover forces as well as uniformed police were reported in hot pursuit of the suspects.

Due to the alert, police set up checkpoints and blocked roads near the section of the Ayalon Freeway in the Bat Yam area.

Heavy traffic jams were reported in the area.
