Mazuz rejects call to indict Netanyahu over London spending spree
By Tomer Zrachin, Haaretz Correspondent

State Prosecutor Meni Mazuz will not order a criminal investigation of Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu over allegations he overspent taxpayers' money while in London in 2006.

In a letter to charity group Ometz, who requested the probe on Netanyahu's expenditure, Mazuz's aide Raz Nizri said both Ometz's petition and similar media allegations lacked sufficient empirical evidence in indict him.

izri's letter further stated that the decision not to indict Netanyahu had nothing to do with public or ethical aspects of the affair. Ometz has responded that it respects Mazuz's resolution but regrets that the opportunity to set expenditure limits for public servants has been missed.

The petition to launch a criminal probe into Netanyahu's spending came Channel Ten television news reported he and his wife had run up a NIS 131,000 bill at London's Connaught hotel while on a diplomatic mission to explain Israel's activities in Lebanon during the Second Lebanon War.

The report said the bill included NIS 11,000 worth of theater tickets as well as tens of thousands of shekels on meals, hair styling and laundry.

Netanyahu denied the allegations and after receiving legal advice, filed a defamation suit against Channel Ten.
