The Israeli economy lost over 2.5 million workdays in 2007 as a result of work strikes. This constitutes a sharp increase since 2006.

"The economy cannot bare such a hefty economic price," said Employment, Trade and Industry Minister Eli Yishai.

Yishai called on employees and employers to settle their differences through negotiations rather than strikes.

According to Employment, Trade and Industry Ministery data, in 2007 there were 2,548,627 strike days ? a figure similar to that of 2005, but nearly 200 times the number of strike days in 2006.

According to the ministry, over 30 percent of the strikes and over 90 percent of the lost workdays were the result of wage disagreements.
