Tycoon Gaydamak said to have made fortune in Russia-Angola deal

A civil lawsuit has been filed against Russian-Israeli business tycoon Arcadi Gaydamak, Channel 10 reported Thursday.

The prosecutors allege that the Russian-born billionaire made his fortune from a deal worth $365 million between the governments of Russia and Angola, in which he served as mediator. The money was supposed to have been transferred to the Angolans but is reputed to have been deposited by Gaydamak into his personal bank account in Luxemburg.

One of the lawyers involved in the lawsuit told Channel 10 that Gaydamak confessed to him over three years ago that the money had indeed been deposited in his own account. This also seems to have been the reason for the Angolan government's refusal to renew the billionaire's passport.

According to the report, the sum of money transferred from the deal quickly turned into a fortune of 1.3 billion dollars, rendering Gaydamak one of the richest people in Israel.

The report further states the prosecution's claim that senior officials in Bank Hapoalim helped Gaydamak with the allegedly illegal transfer of money abroad. The Luxemburg bank is said to have since frozen the account.

Gaydamak said in response to Thursday's report, "I was a main partner in settling the debt between the Angolan and Russian governments, to the satisfaction of both sides." He further claimed his fortune originated from revenues made from the deal, and that the Luxemburg bank had unfrozen his account three years ago. Gaydamak also denied confessing to keeping the money in his possession. "I met [with the lawyer] but didn't confess to anything," he said, adding "It is not true that the Angolan government refuses to renew my passport."
