FM Livni: Israel ready to make sacrifices for peace

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said Monday that Israel's leadership must make difficult decisions during its negotiations with the Palestinians, adding that "Israel is prepared to make sacrifices to reach peace."

During celebrations marking Israel 60th anniversary at the President's Residence in Jerusalem, Livni said the state's leadership need to "look in the eyes of Israelis and tell them that this is the right thing to do."

Livni is serving as Israel's chief negotiator for talks with the Palestinians, alongside former Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia.

Diplomats from more than 80 states participated in the ceremony on Thursday, alongside a number of Israeli regional leaders, including Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupoliansky and Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal.

President Shimon Peres said during the ceremony that relations between Israel and the Palestinians was "much more calm and tranquil," adding that the most difficult step now was putting these conditions on paper.

He said he hoped one day Israelis and Palestinians could live together side by side and called for an end to the "hatred and misunderstandings as soon as possible."

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert voiced hope that the solution for the Middle East conflict was within reach, speaking at an official memorial ceremony for Israel's victims of terror at the national military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.

"There is nothing we desire more than to end the conflict with our neighbors, and there is nothing that would benefit both sides more than the end of the conflict," Olmert said.
