Palestinian witnesses say a Palestinian man has been shot dead in a clash with Israeli settlers.

The incident occurred Friday when two Palestinians opened fire at Israelis hiking in the Ein Yivrod region north of Ramallah, which is designated as Area B under terms of the Oslo Accords. The hikers, who were armed, spotted the armed Palestinians approaching the cave in which they were located.

An exchange of gunfire ensued, which reportedly resulted in the death of one Palestinian. There were no Israeli casualties in the incident.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed a shooting involving settlers and a Palestinian man, but had no further details. It said it was still sorting out conflicting reports on the deadly clash Friday north of the West Bank town of Ramallah.

According to Israeli media, settlers said the Palestinian man fired at them and they returned fire. Palestinian villagers said he apparently was hunting when the settlers killed him. The IDF is attempting to ascertain whether the Palestinians belonged to an armed militant group.
