Chelsea's Avram Grant has been named Barclays Premier League manager of the month for April, the first time ever the award has been won by an Israeli, it was announced Friday.

Grant becomes the first Chelsea manager to capture the title since Jose Mourinho, the popular Portuguese manager whose departure from the club was met with disapproval by the fans and media. Grant led the Blues to an unbeaten April in which the club amassed 10 out of a possible 12 points.

The Israeli coach has also led Chelsea to the Champions League final and to level on points with Manchester United in the Premier League with one weekend of the season remaining, but speculation persists over his future at the club. in the process pulling even with first place Manchester United.

Chelsea and United are slated to meet in the Champions League final later this month in Moscow.

Chelsea: Grant criticism not anti-Jewish
The Times of London reported Thursday that Chelsea have distanced themselves from reports suggesting that anti-Semitism lies behind the criticism that Avram Grant, their manager, has received this season. Pini Zahavi, Grant's agent, told an Israeli newspaper that claimed the Chelsea manager was not getting due recognition for his achievements because of his religion.

A statement on the club's website said: "We would like to officially distance ourselves from comments in the media regarding the reasons behind any criticism Avram Grant may or may not have received since he became our manager."
