MOSCOW - Manchester United beat Chelsea 6-5 Wednesday in a penalty
shootout to win the Champions League title after a 1-1 draw.

Cristiano Ronaldo and John Terry each missed in the shootout before Edwin van der Sar saved a shot from Nicolas Anelka to make United the European champion for the third time.

Carlos Tevez, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson and Ryan Giggs scored United's other kicks, while Michael Ballack, Juliano Belletti, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Salomon Kalou scored for Chelsea.

Frank Lampard scored in regulation for Chelsea after Ronaldo's 26th-minute opener for United.

Chelsea almost scored in the 34th when United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar had to make a reflex save from his own defender, Rio Ferdinand. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech then made a reaction save off a shot from Carlos Tevez in the 35th and recovered to push a follow-up shot from Michael Carrick over the bar.

The match at the Luzhniki Stadium is the first European Cup final in the
53-year history of the competition to have two English teams.

Israelis have taken an intense interest in the fate of Chelsea this season, exhibiting national pride in their fellow countryman, Avraham Grant. The game was shown live on Israel's terrestrial Channel 2 television station. One of the commentators even referred to a change of player by Chelsea as a "substition at Avraham's."
